Where it began

Some rooms just feel right. Finding the pieces that get you there is harder than it should be.

I've been a designer for years, which means I've spent a lot of time in other people's homes — studying what works, what doesn't, and why certain rooms stay with you long after you've left them. The ones that did were never the most formal or the most finished. They were the ones where someone had made very considered choices and then let it all breathe.

A lot of those rooms happened to be on the East End. There's something about the light out there, the pace of it, the way people furnish houses they actually want to live in rather than impress people with — that kept shaping my sense of what good interiors feel like. Sag Harbor, the town, has that quality in abundance. The name stuck.

But the gap I kept running into wasn't really about coast versus inland. It was simpler than that. On one end: rooms that looked decorated — obvious, on-trend, a little exhausting. On the other: stiff old-money formality that's beautiful in theory and uncomfortable to inhabit. What I wanted — and couldn't find a single place to buy — was the thing in between. Chic without announcing it. Elegant, but the kind where you could kick your shoes off and stay for dinner.

That's what Sag Harbor is built around. Not a look, exactly — more of a feeling. The feeling of a home that has a real point of view, put together by someone with genuine taste, that still manages to feel completely relaxed. It translates whether you're furnishing a beach house, a city apartment, or a weekend place somewhere with no water in sight.

Everything we carry, I've seen in person or lived with long enough to have a real opinion about. We don't carry a lot — because that's about how many things I can genuinely stand behind. The test: does this look right in a room where the windows are open, the light is good, and no one is trying too hard?
